1. Introduction
ScholarOn ("we", "us" or "our") is an educational website operated by Utenix Technologies Pvt Ltd in India. We publish educational articles and learning resources, and offer features such as reader accounts, comments, bookmarks, reading history and a newsletter.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store and share personal information when you visit ScholarOn, create an account, interact with content, subscribe to our newsletter or contact us.
We serve visitors internationally. Depending on where you live, additional privacy rights or requirements may apply, and we describe the main ones below. Where the law requires consent for a particular use of your information, we will ask for it.
You can read our articles without creating an account or giving us any personal information.
2. Information we collect
The information we collect depends on how you use ScholarOn.
2.1 Information you provide
Account information: your email address, display name, optional profile photo and password (stored only in encrypted, hashed form). If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile photo from Google.
Comments: comments and replies you post, with the time you posted them.
Bookmarks and reading history: the articles you save, and the articles you have read and how far you got, so you can pick up where you left off.
Newsletter: your email address and whether you have confirmed or cancelled your subscription.
Contact enquiries: your name, email address, message and anything else you include.
Please do not share sensitive personal information in public comments or in enquiries.
2.2 Information collected automatically
Server and security logs: when you load a page, our hosting provider records technical details such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. These are used to run and secure the website.
Privacy-friendly analytics: we measure visits in aggregate (for example, pages viewed, referring websites, country, device and browser type, and page-load speed). This measurement does not use cookies and is not used to identify you or to follow you across other websites.
Article view counts: we count how many times each article is viewed. These counts are not linked to you.
3. How we use your information
To create and manage accounts, and to send account emails such as sign-up confirmations and password resets.
To provide comments, bookmarks and reading history.
To send the newsletter you subscribed to.
To respond to enquiries and provide support.
To operate, maintain and improve ScholarOn, and to understand which content is useful.
To detect and prevent spam, fraud, abuse and security incidents.
To protect our users, our services and our legal rights, and to comply with the law.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles.
4. Newsletter and email
We use Resend to deliver our newsletter, account emails (such as sign-up confirmations) and replies to contact enquiries. Resend processes email addresses and message content on our behalf, and may record delivery information such as whether an email was delivered.
You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in every newsletter email, or by contacting legal@scholaron.com. Unsubscribing does not stop essential account emails. We keep a record of your unsubscribe request so that we respect it.

5. Accounts, comments, bookmarks and reading history
If you create an account, we process the information needed to provide and maintain it.
Comments are public. Your display name, profile photo and comment are shown to other visitors. Please do not post anything you do not want others to see. We moderate comments and may edit, hide or remove them to deal with spam, abuse, breaches of our Terms of Use or other legitimate concerns.
Your bookmarks and reading history are private to your account.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time from your account settings. When you do, we delete your profile, comments (including any replies to them), bookmarks and reading history. We may keep limited information where necessary for legal compliance, security or resolving disputes. If you need help, contact legal@scholaron.com.
6. Cookies and similar technologies
ScholarOn currently uses only essential cookies and browser storage:
Sign-in cookies keep you signed in and protect your account.
Browser storage remembers your reading preferences on your own device, such as light or dark mode and text size. This stays on your device and is not sent to us.
We do not currently use analytics or advertising cookies. Our analytics (section 7) are cookie-free.
Some articles include YouTube videos in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode. YouTube does not set cookies until you play a video; once you do, YouTube's own policies apply.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, but signing in will not work without essential cookies. If we ever introduce non-essential cookies, we will update this policy and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
7. Analytics
We use Vercel Web Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights to understand traffic and page performance. They do not use cookies, do not identify individual visitors and do not track you across other websites; they report aggregated figures such as page views, referrers, countries, device types and loading speed.
If we add other analytics services in the future, such as Google Analytics, we will update this policy first and obtain consent where the law requires it.
8. Advertising
As of the effective date of this policy, ScholarOn shows no advertising, and Google AdSense and other advertising services are not active.
If we introduce advertising in the future, advertising providers may use cookies, pixels, identifiers or similar technologies to show adverts, measure their performance, prevent invalid activity and, where enabled and permitted, personalise adverts. Before that happens, we will update this policy to name the providers and describe their data practices, and we will put in place any consent and preference choices required by law and by those providers. We will not show personalised advertising to anyone we know to be a child.
If Google advertising is introduced, information about it will be available at https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads and you will be able to manage settings at https://adssettings.google.com/.
9. How we share information
We share personal information only when necessary to run ScholarOn, provide the services you request, protect the website or comply with the law.
9.1 Service providers
These providers process information on our behalf, under their own security and privacy commitments:
Supabase: our database, sign-in and file storage (accounts, comments, bookmarks, reading history, newsletter list and contact messages).
Vercel: website hosting, server logs and cookie-free analytics.
Resend: email delivery.
Google: sign-in with Google, if you choose to use it, and YouTube videos embedded in articles.
Unsplash: some article photos load from Unsplash, which receives your IP address and browser details when the image loads.
9.2 Legal and safety purposes
We may disclose information to courts, regulators, law enforcement or other parties where required by law, or where reasonably necessary to protect our rights, our users, our services or anyone's safety.
9.3 Business transfers
Personal information may be transferred as part of a merger, acquisition, restructuring, financing or sale of all or part of our business, subject to applicable law.
9.4 With your direction
We share information when you ask or authorise us to, for example when you share an article on a social network using our share buttons (those buttons are simple links and do not send your information to the social network until you use them).
We do not sell personal information. If we ever introduce activities that some laws treat as "selling" or "sharing" personal information, such as certain targeted advertising, we will provide the disclosures and opt-out choices those laws require first.
10. International data transfers
ScholarOn is operated from India. Our main database and hosting providers store and process data in the United States, and our providers may process information in other countries. Privacy laws there may differ from those where you live. Where the law requires safeguards for international transfers, we rely on appropriate mechanisms, such as the data processing terms our providers offer.
11. How long we keep information
Accounts: while your account is active. When you delete it, we delete your profile, comments, bookmarks and reading history.
Comments: until you or we remove them, or until you delete your account.
Newsletter: while you are subscribed, plus a record of unsubscribe requests so we respect them.
Contact enquiries: as long as needed to respond and keep a reasonable record, normally no more than two years.
Server logs and analytics: according to our hosting and analytics providers' retention settings, which are limited periods.
When information is no longer needed, we delete or anonymise it.
12. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information, including encrypted connections, hashed passwords and access controls that limit who can see personal data. No website or storage system is completely secure, however. Please keep your password confidential, and contact us if you believe your account has been accessed without permission.
13. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
access the personal information we hold about you and receive a copy of it;
correct inaccurate information;
delete your information;
withdraw consent where we rely on consent;
object to or restrict certain uses;
opt out of targeted advertising or the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information, if we ever engage in those activities;
nominate another person to exercise your rights if you die or become incapacitated (India);
complain to a data protection authority.
To make a request, email legal@scholaron.com with "Privacy Request" in the subject line, and include enough information for us to find your account or data. We may need to verify your identity first. We will not treat you differently for exercising your rights.
India
If you are in India, you may raise any grievance about how we handle your personal data with our Grievance Officer at legal@scholaron.com (subject: "Grievance"). If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
European Economic Area and United Kingdom
If you are in the EEA or UK, Utenix Technologies Pvt Ltd is the controller of your personal information. We process it on these legal bases: to perform our contract with you (your account, comments, bookmarks and reading history); your consent (the newsletter, and any optional cookies we may introduce); our legitimate interests in running, securing and improving ScholarOn (server logs, cookie-free analytics, moderation and spam prevention); and compliance with legal obligations. You may complain to your local data protection authority.
14. Children's privacy
ScholarOn's articles are written for students, teachers, parents and other learners, and anyone may read them without an account.
To create an account, post comments or subscribe to the newsletter, you must be 18 or older, or have the consent of a parent or guardian. ScholarOn is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. We do not track or profile children, and we do not show them targeted advertising.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has given us personal information without your consent, contact legal@scholaron.com and we will delete it.
15. Third-party websites and content
Our articles link to research papers and other websites, and some embed content such as YouTube videos. We do not control those websites or services, and their own privacy policies apply when you visit or use them.
16. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes in our services, technology, data practices or the law. We will update the effective date at the top of this page, and where the law requires it, we will give additional notice or ask for your consent. If we introduce advertising, new analytics or other services that materially change how we process personal information, we will update this policy before they go live.
