Abstract

The paper on the seven wonders of the ancient world shows us the engineering marvel which was present in the olden days. Though modern equipment was not used, the wonders were still built by the architects which reveal their creativity and imagination. The patience with which these long-term projects were handled is something to be commendable as all of them took more than 12 to 15 years of hard work and labour to be built. Expensive metals like bronze, gold and ivory were used.in the constructing the statues and marble for the Mausoleum and the Temple. One cannot compare the wonders to our modern-day monuments, buildings and statues as the ancient ones had surpassed all engineering techniques. The references ‘Seven Wonders of the Ancient World’ and ‘What Are the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World?’, are the ones which enlighten us on this matter.

Introduction

The seven wonders of the ancient world were known as ‘Themata’, a Greek word meaning ‘things to be seen’. The seven wonders are the Pyramids of Giza, The Hanging gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis, the Statue of Zeus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse (Pharos) of Alexandria. They were located in Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Iraq. Out of these, only the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt is still standing today (Stewart, 2018.n.pag). Five were created by the Greek architects who constructed it without the usage of any modern equipment which is really commendable (Laliberte,2013. p.p.5,6). The seven wonders were all built in various time periods, the Pyramids of Giza were built between 2700 and 2500 B.C., the Hanging Gardens of Babylon between 605 and 562 B.C., The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus in about 550 B.C., The Statue of Zeus in 450.B.C, The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in 353.B.C., The Colossus of Rhodes in 282 B.C and The Lighthouse of Alexandria in 280 B.C (Laliberte, 2013.n.pag).

The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt:

This is the only remaining wonder which has withstood the forces of nature. It is situated in Giza on the banks of the river Nile in Egypt. Three pyramids are found here, The Khufu, Khafra and Menkaura of which Khufu is called “The Great Pyramid”. It spans over an area of more than 13 acres and has 2 million stone blocks whose individual weight is from 2 to 30 tons. There was no other taller structure than this for 4,000 years. The walls were built in a sloping manner which was in accordance with the rays of the sun and then filled with limestone. Inside the pyramid there were narrow corridors and secret hiding places for storing the treasures which were looted, still most of them are missing today (History.com Editors, 2019.n.pag).

Hanging Gardens of Babylon:

These gardens were built by King Nebuchadnezzar II in Babylon, which is now Iraq. He constructed it for his wife Queen Amyitis who longed for greenery. These gardens were 75 feet above the ground and had trees and flowers (Stewart, 2018.n.pag). The only factor is that none could find out if the garden really existed. Some historians and archaeologists are of the opinion that it was located in Nineveh, which was the capital of the Assyrian Empire and some feel that the garden was just an imagination .Berossus of Kos in 290 B.C. was the first person to mention the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and his description is that there were high raised terraces made out of stone, having trees and flowers. There was a system of drawing water from the river to water the plants and stairs aided one to climb up to reach each level of the terrace (Cartwright, 2018.n.pag).

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Greece:

It was the famous sculptor Phidias, who was responsible for the creation of the Statue of the Greek god Zeus which was made out of ivory and gold. The statue was located in Olympia where the Pan-Hellenic Olympic games were held once in four years .It was more than 40 feet in height and depicted Zeus as seated on a throne with a garland of olive shoots on his head ,his right hand had a Nike (Goddess of Victory) who wore a ribbon
