Step-By-Step Solution

1. Which three phases of regional dress influences affected fashions across most of northern Europe in the sixteenth century? Give specific examples of the design elements that were widely adopted by both men and women.

In the first quarter of the 1500s, Italian influences prevailed including wide, squared necklines, voluminous sleeves, and contouring bodices. Between 1520 into the 1550s, German slashing was applied to virtually every surface of garments. From the exuberance of slashing came the design of men’s upper stocks. By the mid-1500s, the artifice of Spanish styles became popular. The body was encased and reshaped by exaggerated silhouettes including for men the peascod belly, padded codpiece, huge oversleeves, and pumpkin hose. For women, Spanish fashions reshaped the female form with a conical farthingale, flat-front bodice, and constricting corset.
