Step-By-Step Solution

1. Which two key elements distinguish fashion from costume? Explain how these two characteristics of fashion developed in the High Middle Ages.

Change and mobility distinguish fashion from costume. Clothing styles began to change more rapidly as the aristocracy attempted to maintain its unique social status from a usurping middle class. Mobility of fashion trends occurred because of increased travel for pilgrimages, business and pleasure by both the nobility and the middle classes.

What social and economic changes in the High Middle Ages set the stage for the development of fashion?

A burgeoning middle class aspired to emulate the appearance and manners of their social superiors by copying the

clothing styles and behavior of the nobility. In turn, the aristocracy first attempted class restriction by enacting sumptuary laws. When this failed, the nobility abandoned the styles of clothing being copied by the bourgeosis and adopted new forms of dress to reestablish their distinction.

What was the result of the phenomenon of fashion in the High Middle Ages?

Changing trends led to a shorter duration of styles so that by the end of the era, fashions evolved over decades rather than centuries.
