Chapter 9, Problem 1 : 1. In old age, women and men reveal...

1. In old age, women and men reveal many differences in their health. Discuss what those differences are and the possible reasons for them.

Step-By-Step Solution

1.For example, there are differences between women and men in their life expectancy, chronic conditions and limitations in activities of daily living, as well as psychological well-being and causes of death. Women still outlive men, women suffer from more chronic diseases, and are more likely to experience more psychological distress than men.

There are several possible reasons for these differences. First, women’s higher life expectancy is partly due to a reduction in the deaths that used to be associated with pregnancy and childbirth. Second, there are different determinants of health for women compared to men. For example, social structural factors such as caring for a family and social support are stronger determinants of health for women, where as for men, it is personal health practices such as smoking. Third, men and women are socialized differently and have different traditional roles, which may mean that it is more acceptable for women to adopt the sick role compared to men.
