Chapter 8, Problem 1 :   1. Older people tend to...

1. Older people tend to rate their present level of life satisfaction as lower than the level in earlier life. Does such a trend imply that mental well-being decreases with age? Discuss the evidence.

Step-By-Step Solution

1.

A myth that has persisted in our culture is that mental well-being decreases with age, despite the lack of evidence to support this belief. The evidence suggests that older people also believe this myth, with respondents aged 51 years and over reporting lower life satisfaction in the present than in the past, and respondents aged 66 years and over reporting higher life satisfaction in the past than in the future. However, the actual distributions of well-being scores fail to support these expectations, and no loss was found within the age ranges previously cited. Hence, it is time to dispel this myth.
