Social support is a broad term sometimes used to only capture the positive interactions with others, and sometimes used to refer to all interactions whether positive, negative or neutral. There is inconsistency in the terms and definitions used for social support in the literature. Other terms used include but are not limited to informal support, social network, and informal network. Social networks refer to the entire web of relationships with which the individual is involved. Social support may include among others, one of the following three components or slight variations thereof: emotional support, informational support, and tangible or instrumental support.

Social support is important for older people because of its direct and indirect effects on wellbeing. While the research findings are inconsistent, in general, there is support for the direct and indirect effects views that having social support is related to higher well-being and a greater quality of life among older people.
