EXERCISE 2: Location Name __________________________________________โ€ƒโ€ƒ Section ____________________ Exercise 2 Problems/soLUtioNsโ€”Part II 1. 2. 3. Using a globe, determine the latitude and longitude of the following cities. Be sure to indicate if the location is north or south latitude, and east or west ยญlongitude. Indicate latitude and longitude to the nearest whole degree (round down if less than 30โ€ฒ; round up if 30โ€ฒ or more). City Latitude Longitude (a) Chicago, Illinois 42ยฐ N ________ 88ยฐ W ________ (b) Tokyo, Japan 35ยฐ N ________ 140ยฐ E ________ (c) Sydney, Australia 35ยฐ S ________ 151ยฐ E ________ (d) Singapore 1ยฐ N ________ 104ยฐ E ________ (e) Buenos Aires, Argentina 35ยฐ S ________ 58ยฐ W ________ Using a globe, determine which major city is located at the following coordinates: Latitude Longitude City (a) 14ยฐ N 100ยฐ E Bangkok _________________________ (b) 56ยฐ N 38ยฐ E Moscow _________________________ (c) 19ยฐ N 99ยฐ W Mexico City _________________________ (d) 1ยฐ S 37ยฐ E Nairobi _________________________ (e) 37ยฐ S 175ยฐ E Auckland _________________________ (a) What is the latitude and longitude of your school? (Estimate to the nearest minute of latitude and longitude; be sure to indicate if the location is north or south latitude, and east or west longitude.) (b) What resource did you use to determine this? 7 Copyright ยฉ 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. On the diagram shown, plot the following coordinates with a dot. Then label each dot with its corresponding letter. (a) 10ยฐ N, 40ยฐ W (b) 50ยฐ N, 40ยฐ E (c) 40ยฐ N, 25ยฐ W (d) 5ยฐ S, 10ยฐ W (e) 65ยฐ N, 70ยฐ E Use the index of an atlas to find the following places. Determine the latitude and longitude to the nearest degree. Place Latitude Longitude (a) Pusan (Busan) 35ยฐ N ________ 129ยฐ E ________ (b) Reykjavik (Reikjavik) 64ยฐ N ________ 22ยฐ W ________ (c) Walvis Bay 23ยฐ S ________ 14ยฐ E ________ (d) Tuvalu (Ellice Islands) 8ยฐ S ________ 177ยฐ E ________ If you start at the equator and travel to 10ยฐ N, approximately how many kilometers (or miles) north of the equator will you be? Take the circumference of Earth to be 40,000 kilometers (24,900 miles). Show your calculations. 40,000/360 = 111.1 km/degree = 1111 (approx. 1100 km) 24,900/360 = 69.2 mi./degree = 692 mi. (approx. 690 mi.) If you travel west through 10ยฐ of longitude along the equator, the distance traveled will be very different from the distance traveled through 10ยฐ of longitude at 60ยฐ N. Why? Meridians converge at the poles and so are closer together at 60ยฐ N than at 0ยฐ. 8 Copyright ยฉ 2017 Pearson Education, Inc. M02_HESS1011_12_SE_C02.indd 8 8/11/16 8:10 PM
